Amazon Outage Knocks Out Major Apps -- Stock Pushes Higher On Recovery

Oct 20 - Amazon AMZN stock rose about 1% in Monday afternoon trading even as its cloud unit, Amazon Web Services, dealt with a large-scale outage that disrupted several major platforms, including Snapchat SNAP, Robinhood HOOD, Roblox (RBLX), Lyft LYFT, McDonald's MCD and Disney (DIS), according to a Monday update on the AWS health dashboard.

The company reported higher error rates and slower service performance in its US-EAST-1 region overnight. AWS said early Monday it had begun implementing fixes and was seeing steady recovery across most affected services.

By midmorning, Amazon said it had applied multiple mitigations across several data zones but continued to face elevated errors in launching new EC2 instances.

User reports of service disruptions began spiking around 2:30 a.m. EST, according to data from Downdetector, with thousands of complaints logged from the U.S. and other regions.

AWS later confirmed that most global services depending on the impacted region had recovered, though engineers were still working toward full restoration.
