Microsoft plans to offer cloud computing customers AMD's AI chips as an alternative to Nvidia's H100 family of powerful graphics processing units (GPUs). Details will be provided at Microsoft's Build developer conference next week. Microsoft's clusters of Advanced Micro Devices' (AMD) flagship MI300X AI chips will be sold through its Azure cloud computing service.

These chips are powerful enough to train and run large AI models, and AMD expects $4 billion in AI chip revenue this year. Microsoft's cloud computing unit also sells access to its own in-house AI chips called Maia. The Cobalt 100 processors, which Microsoft plans to preview next week, offer 40% better performance than other processors based on Arm Holdings' technology.

Snowflake and others have begun using them. The Cobalt chips are being tested to power Teams, Microsoft's messaging tool for businesses, and are positioned to compete with Amazon.com's in-house Graviton CPUs.
